If you’ve noticed an increase in the number of fake Valentine’s Day e-cards you’ve received, you’re not alone. BitDefender, among others, is reporting that the Waledac virus (the lastest incarnation of the venerable Storm worm) has been ramping up over the last couple of weeks, sending increasing numbers of fake e-cards. The URLs in these cards lead to webpages that either attempt to hijack your machine with your own installation of the Waledac virus or take your money by creating popups that indicate that you’re already infected and offering to sell you antivirus software.

Normal “safe computing” practices will help you get through this holiday season, though:

• Don’t click on links from people you don’t know.
• Be careful clicking on links from people you do know. Make sure you know where they’re directing you.
• Keep your anti-virus, firewall, and operating system up-to-date.
